Background of the Study
Broadcast media play a crucial role in shaping public opinion, disseminating information, and fostering national development. However, the regulation of broadcast media remains a contentious issue, as it seeks to balance public interest, media independence, and governmental oversight. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, regulatory bodies such as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) are tasked with enforcing guidelines to ensure professionalism, prevent the spread of misinformation, and promote cultural values. Recent studies highlight the challenges of implementing broadcast media regulations in a rapidly evolving media landscape, where technological advancements and socio-political dynamics often outpace regulatory mechanisms (Adebayo et al., 2023; Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2024). This study assesses the effectiveness of broadcast media regulation in Makurdi, focusing on its impact on content quality, compliance, and public perception.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of regulatory frameworks, the effectiveness of broadcast media regulation in Makurdi remains debatable. Issues such as political interference, weak enforcement, and noncompliance by media outlets undermine the regulatory objectives, leading to the dissemination of biased or low-quality content (Okoro et al., 2023; Bello, 2024). This study examines the gaps in the regulatory system and their implications for the credibility and professionalism of broadcast media in the area.
